How You&Me Started: Our Story
To kick off 2025, we decided to create a video about the origins and evolution of our buyer’s agency, from its founding vision to its current success.
People often ask us about how You&Me Personalised Property Services began. The short answer is that it came from seeing a real problem in real estate: buyers needed someone in their corner. Here’s our story.
Where It All Started
Heath Bassett, co-founder of You&Me, recalls the moment that sparked the idea: “I was working as a selling agent, doing a regular home open. The same thing kept happening: buyers would come through and ask what they should do next, how much they should offer, what the process was.”
The conversations were always the same. Selling agents would tell buyers, “We’re offering it from $1 million, you need to be north of that, and you might not get two bites at the cherry.” This same conversation would happen with ten different buyers interested in the same property. None of them had anyone representing their interests.
The Reality of Real Estate
“Most people buy property once every seven to ten years,” explains Heath. “They’re making massive financial decisions without proper representation.”
Think about it, buying property is probably the biggest financial decision most people make. You’re spending seven or eight figures, yet you’re trying to do it alone. Top-performing sales agents are excellent at what they do. They’ve spent years perfecting their craft, and they’re focused on getting the best outcome for their seller.
Learning from Other Markets
When Heath brought this idea to Simon Deering, his response came from valuable international experience. Simon had worked in real estate in New York, where having a buyer’s agent is standard practice. In fact, 99% of transactions there involve both a selling agent and a buying agent.
Building the You&Me buyer’s agency
Heath explains the origin of our name: “You&Me came from a simple idea: we’re in this together with our clients. The house in our logo represents what we do. We help people find and secure their properties.”
When we first started exploring this idea, buyers’ agents weren’t common in Australia. The concept had only emerged in Sydney about 15 years earlier. We saw an opportunity to bring this much-needed service to more people.
Our Values
Simon describes how our values came to be: “When we started, we spent hours looking at what big companies like McDonald’s, Tesla, and Apple were doing with their values. But we realised we needed to focus on what mattered to us. Coming from competitive sports backgrounds, we understood the importance of certain core principles.”
These principles became our three core values:
- Winning Together: As Simon puts it, “We love to win, but it’s about winning for our clients. This shows up in different ways – sometimes it’s getting a $20,000 discount on a purchase price, sometimes it’s finding an off-market opportunity, or sometimes it’s handling a smooth interstate move. Every win counts, whether big or small.”
- Persistence: “Real estate isn’t always easy,” Heath notes. “Sometimes you miss out on a property by five or ten thousand dollars. What matters is how you handle those moments and keep moving forward. We believe in what we call ‘one percenters’ – those small, consistent improvements that create real advantages over time. When you do these every day for six years, you create a significant edge.”
- Integrity: Simon emphasises, “For us, this means doing the right thing when no one’s watching. Simple as that. It’s easy to do the right thing when others are looking, but true integrity shows in your actions when you’re alone.”
Looking Forward
Six years later, we’ve grown from just the two of us to a solid team. We’re proud of what we’ve built, but more importantly, we’re proud of the people we’ve helped. Our Google reviews and client success stories tell the real story of what we do.
The property market has changed a lot since we started, but our mission hasn’t. We’re still here to champion buyers, making sure they have someone in their corner during one of life’s biggest decisions. We’re excited about what’s ahead in 2025 and beyond.
